Città della Pieve Noble Palace

Città della Pieve, Umbria

The Noble Palace of Città della Pieve is a fifteenth-century building of high artistic value in the central square of the Umbrian town. The intervention of Andrea Magnaghi Architecture was diversified. The central floor has been renovated in full respect of the tradition of the area, while the attic has been designed in a strongly contemporary way, a contrast that makes the new highly distinguishable. In the basement, a Spa draws inspiration from the ancient Roman Baths tradition.

Japanese and minimalist references characterize the attic, reachable through a staircase cut into a resin cube. The large space is elaborated into areas divided by transparent borders, such as the wooden rods that filter the light or the dimmable light filters that separate the bathrooms from the rest of the environment. The Studio wanted to create a differentiation within a spatial continuum, giving the feeling of non-separated spaces. Each functional object had to have a sculptural value.

In the basement of the building a Spa was built with strong cultural references to the frigidarium and calidarium, the hot and cold pools of the Roman Baths. As per tradition, the hammam is covered by a dome. Other traditional elements are the materials used, stone and recycled tiles, which are however encapsulated in contemporary materials such as resin and black iron.
